She looked up, searching Judy’s face with real concern. “Are you going to hate me for this? Can we still be friends?”
Judy looked shocked, then kind of bewildered. “Why would I hate you? If Caleb doesn’t like me, that’s on me. It’s not your fault.”
Rebecca couldn’t help but smile, feeling a weight lift off her chest. After everything that happened with Lottie, she’d gotten pretty sensitive about where she stood with people. If Judy wanted to keep her distance over this, she’d get it. She just hadn’t expected Judy to shrug it off so easily, blaming her own lack of luck with Caleb instead.
Thank goodness they weren’t about to fall out over some guy.
Judy grabbed Rebecca’s arm, grinning. “Relax, Rebecca. When it comes to chasing after guys, I play fair. I’m not about that petty competition stuff.”
She giggled and added, “Besides, I’ve got plenty of tricks up my sleeve. I’m confident about winning Caleb over.”
Rebecca just stared at her, a little speechless.
“Well, I hope you get your wish,” Rebecca said, ruffling Judy’s hair with a laugh.
Then Judy winked. “So, Rebecca, what do you think of my brother?”
The mention of Paul jogged Rebecca’s memory. “Oh, right. He left his scarf at my place last time. I brought it with me today. Can you give it back to him?”
Judy’s eyes sparkled. Whoa, her brother was moving fast. Scarves already? She shook her head quickly. “Our homes are pretty far apart. It’s kind of a hassle to deliver it. Just keep it for now. When you see him next, you can give it to him yourself.”
Inside, Judy gave herself a silent round of applause. Clever girl. If she played her cards right, maybe her allowance would double next month.
Meanwhile, at the Larson family home, Paul was working in his study when he suddenly sneezed three times in a row.
His mother Alexis hurried in, looking worried. “Are you coming down with something? I’ll ask the housekeeper to make you some ginger tea.”
Paul waved her off. “It’s okay. I’ll just drink more water.”
When they were coming down the mountain, all three of them had been exhausted. They ended up grabbing dinner at a little restaurant nearby, then headed home their separate ways.
Rebecca got home first. She took a shower, slipped into bed, and was just about to relax when her phone rang. It was Stephen.
“Hello, boss?”
