Sonja couldn’t help but frown. She’d been trying to get in touch with Caleb privately for a while now, but he turned her down every single time. She had even gone as far as asking her cousin’s classmate for Caleb’s address, but that just made him angry. He deleted her contact info on the spot.

She had always thought Caleb was just like Dr. Palmer, cold and distant, looking down on everyone. But the way he looked at Rebecca… there was something different there. He actually smiled at her, eyes soft and warm. What was it about Rebecca? What had she done to make Caleb act this way?

The ribbon-cutting ceremony wrapped up, and Bruce came over to stand next to Sonja. Inspiration struck. She looped her arm through his and flashed a smile. “Bruce, it looks like Rebecca and Caleb know each other pretty well.”

After the ceremony, the university arranged a dinner for the investors and Dr. Palmer. Stephen invited Rebecca along. The private dining room was small. Rebecca and Caleb were the last to arrive, and only one seat was left, right next to Dr. Palmer.

Sonja, sitting between Bruce and Paul, arched an eyebrow and smiled. “Looks like there’s just one seat left.” She said it on purpose, hoping Rebecca would take the hint and leave. This was supposed to be a business dinner between investors and university officials. Rebecca was just an ordinary employee. She didn’t belong here.

One of the university leaders looked confused, clearly not remembering who Rebecca was. Caleb nudged Rebecca gently. “Rebecca, you take a seat. I’ll ask the waiter for another chair.”

Rebecca shook her head. “I couldn’t possibly. You take the seat.”
