A rush of anger hit her out of nowhere. Rebecca’s brows tightened. “Bruce, what exactly do you want?”
Bruce’s eyes were cold and unreadable as he looked at her. “Do you know Caleb? Dr. Palmer’s favorite student?”
“So what if I do?”
“I saw you two talking the other day. You seemed pretty close. Are you two...”
Rebecca yanked her hand free from his grip. “We’re just friends.”
“As long as you’re just friends,” Bruce said, suddenly serious.
Rebecca let out a bitter laugh. “You’re about to get engaged to Sonja. Why do you care who I spend time with? Mind your own business.”
“Who said I was getting engaged?” Bruce frowned. “I never said that.”
She couldn’t even be bothered to argue. Whether he got engaged or not, it had nothing to do with her. All she wanted was for him to stay out of her life.
Rebecca walked away, not looking back. Bruce started after her, but Sonja’s voice called him to a halt.
“Bruce, what are you doing here? I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”
Bruce’s face was stone cold, his eyes so frosty that Sonja hesitated, not daring to speak for a moment. Eventually, she forced a smile and stepped closer, looping her arm through his. “What’s wrong?”
He stared at her for a few seconds, then pulled his arm away. “Did you tell people we were getting engaged?”
Sonja froze. She had only mentioned it to Rebecca. Did he just run into her?
“So, you met Rebecca just now? Did she tell you that?” Sonja’s gaze dropped, her smile turning bitter. “She’s always first in your heart, isn’t she. You just believe whatever she says.”
Lost in thought, he heard footsteps behind him. He turned, his face lighting up. “Rebecca,” he called, stepping forward. “I came to see you again.”
Rebecca’s face turned stormy. “Stay away from me. You’re not my father. I’ve told you—my dad is gone. Now leave, or I’ll call the police.”
“Rebecca, I’ve always been here. Your mom lied to you.”
“Leave now, or I’m calling the cops!”
“Rebecca, I really am your father.”
Their argument grew louder, finally drawing attention from inside. The door creaked open and Samantha stepped out. She stared at Alan, not recognizing him at first after so many years. Then, slowly, it clicked.
“Rebecca, come here.” Samantha reached out, pulling her daughter behind her, shielding her with her body.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
