She shot her ex-husband a wary look and asked, her voice cold, “Why are you here?”
Alan didn’t bother hiding his irritation. “I’m here to see my daughter. After all these years, what have you been telling her? You let her think I was dead. That’s just too much.”
Too much? Samantha almost laughed.
Her chest tightened with anger. “Have you ever paid a single cent of child support? You might as well have been dead as far as we’re concerned.”
Alan choked on his words, but after all these years, he’d learned not to argue when he was wrong. He switched tactics.
“Rebecca is my daughter. I have a legal right to see her. And when I’m old, she has to take care of me.”
Samantha was so furious her chest hurt. “You never raised her. You don’t get to expect her to look after you now.”
Her head spun as she finished. She swayed and nearly lost her balance.
Rebecca stepped in just in time, steadying her mom. She turned and glared at Alan, her voice icy. “You’re not welcome here. Leave. Now!”
She didn’t wait for a reply. The door slammed shut behind him.
Inside, Rebecca helped her mom to the sofa and fetched a glass of warm water from the kitchen. “Mom, here… take your medicine.”
Half an hour later, Samantha was feeling better. She looked at Rebecca, tears streaming down her face.
“I can’t believe he actually had the nerve to show up. He was the one who wanted the divorce. He promised to leave with nothing and never bother us again.”
