Bruce came downstairs looking for Sonja. After a lot of convincing from one of the professors at Larkhaven College, Dr. Palmer finally agreed to meet with just the two of them. The meeting was set for that evening at a cozy little restaurant behind the college, the same place where they’d celebrated Dr. Palmer’s birthday before. Sonja had originally suggested somewhere fancier, but Dr. Palmer politely turned her down, so she dropped the idea. That alone told her a lot about his personality.
She had done her research, finding out that Dr. Palmer loved art and good tea. She had spent quite a bit picking out a classic painting and some premium tea to bring as gifts. In her experience, scholars didn’t care much about money, but gifts that touched on their passions were a different story.
When they arrived, Dr. Palmer was already seated in the private room, looking calm and composed. Caleb, his top student, sat by his side. Sonja and Bruce glanced at each other. Bruce stepped up first, bowing with respect.
“We’re really grateful for this chance to talk with you in private, Dr. Palmer.”
Dr. Palmer nodded politely and gave a quick handshake. Once everyone were seated and the food was ordered, an awkward silence filled the room.
Dr. Palmer broke it first. “You asked to meet privately. I assume you have something important to discuss. Please, go ahead.”
That was direct. Sonja and Bruce hadn’t expected him to just cut to the chase like that, and for a moment, neither knew what to say.
Social situations were Sonja’s specialty, though. She didn’t miss a beat. Smiling, she said, “Dr. Palmer, I heard you’re a fan of art and tea. I brought you a painting and two tins of Darjeeling tea. I hope you’ll like them.”
Bruce chimed in, “We can talk about business over dinner if you’d like.”
That was how business people did things, easing into negotiations over a meal. But Dr. Palmer clearly wasn’t that type. He waved his hand.
“I can’t accept these gifts. Let’s just get to the point.”
His refusal was straightforward and left no room for argument. The room grew tense for a moment.
Caleb stepped in with a gentle explanation, “It’s university policy. Faculty can’t accept gifts. It’s better to just bring it up directly. He also prefers not to talk work during meals.”
