He stood up and called to Caleb, “Let’s go.”
Caleb shot them an apologetic look. “Sorry, we’ve got to go.” With that, the two men left, and suddenly Sonja and Bruce were alone in the private room.
A moment later, a waiter came in carrying a tray. He seemed a little surprised to see only two people left, but he didn’t say anything, just started setting the dishes on the table.
Out of nowhere, Sonja’s temper exploded. She knocked one of the plates off the table, sending food crashing to the floor.
“That old bastard… how dare he mess with me!” she spat, seething with frustration.
The waiter just stood there, wide-eyed and frozen. Bruce was startled too, staring at Sonja with a furrowed brow. For a second, her face was twisted with anger, almost unrecognizable. Was this really the gentle, thoughtful Sonja he knew?
Sonja quickly seemed to realize how out of character she’d just acted. She took Bruce’s arm, her voice suddenly soft. “I’m sorry, Bruce. I didn’t mean to scare you. I’m just so mad. He totally lied to us. He has the patent, I know it. He just doesn’t want to sell.”
But her words didn’t really make Bruce feel any better. He quietly pulled his arm away from her, still lost in his own thoughts. One thing he did agree with, though—Dr. Palmer was definitely making excuses. The patent was probably still his, and he just didn’t want to let it go.
On the way home, Sonja started to accept it. The patent wasn’t happening. Still, they had to push ahead with the new product. A successful launch would bring in new clients, make the company’s numbers look good, and get them ready for an IPO next quarter. If they went public, her stock options would finally pay off…
That thought gave her a new burst of confidence. She turned to Bruce and promised, “Bruce, it’s okay. We’ll be fine even without the patent. With Shawn and me leading the project, I guarantee our new product launch will go smoothly in Q1. We’ve already done the research—lots of our long-term clients are excited about it.”
Bruce let out a slow breath. At this point, there wasn’t much else they could do.
Outside, city lights flickered and blurred together as the car sped through traffic. Bruce stared out the window, his mind wandering. If Rebecca were here, would she have found a better way out of this mess?
