Sonja saw the look on his face and grew even bolder. She was pretty much certain now—he was over Rebecca. Once the first quarter’s product launch went smoothly, she would bring up their engagement. It would fall right into place.

On the other side of things, Dr. Palmer and Caleb were having a chat.

Caleb frowned. “Why not just ask Rebecca what she wants? Those people seemed ready to pay a fortune. Maybe she’d be willing to sell.”

Dr. Palmer shook his head. “Rebecca’s already told me she’s not planning to sell the patent. She has her own plans for it.”

He paused for a moment, then added, “The reason I didn’t tell those two the patent was in Rebecca’s hands was because I don’t want them bothering her. She’s really busy right now.”

Hearing that, Caleb felt a little guilty. He’d seen the dark circles under Rebecca’s eyes that morning and could guess she hadn’t been sleeping much. Dr. Palmer was right. Better not to mention anything, just in case those two started pestering her.

Monday rolled around and Judy showed up for her first day at the company. Rebecca introduced her to everyone. The programmers had never met anyone quite as cute and sweet as Judy. She charmed them all right away. Even Jon was treating her like a kid sister, bringing her snacks and buying her coffee. By the end of the day, Judy had become everyone’s favorite.

Cindy, though, seemed a little down. Rebecca noticed and followed her gaze. Jon was over at Judy’s desk, explaining something. He was even sitting beside her, showing her how it worked on her computer, just in case she didn’t get it.

Rebecca caught on instantly. So, Cindy was jealous. She grinned and gave Cindy a gentle poke on the head. “And you keep saying you aren’t in love with him.”

Cindy pouted and looked away. “I won’t anymore.”

Rebecca raised an eyebrow. “You’re really done? You won’t even give it another shot? Feels like a waste.”

Cindy smiled weakly. “That night, after you went inside, he asked if we could just be friends.”

Rebecca instantly knew which night she meant—the one at the villa.

“If he only wants to be friends, my feelings aren’t gonna mean anything.” Cindy’s voice was quiet.

Rebecca didn’t say anything for a while. Then she hugged her. She understood all too well how much it hurt to have a one-sided crush.

“There are plenty of guys out there. You can pick whoever you want.”
