Cindy looked like she might burst into tears. “It’s just a mosquito bite.”
Rebecca laughed. “Those mosquitoes sure are getting bold, surviving even in early spring.”
Cindy realized there was no use hiding anymore. She set down her fork, braced herself, and admitted, “You guessed it. We slept together.”
Rebecca didn’t look surprised. She just let out a long sigh.
“I thought you said you wanted to move on and forget about him. So what now?”
Cindy looked a little lost. “I don’t know. I’ll take it as it comes. It’s not like I’m losing anything.”
Thinking of Jon’s body, Rebecca suddenly understood exactly what Cindy meant by not losing out.
The two of them left the restaurant and, just as they stepped outside, ran into Stephen and Jon.
All four locked eyes for a second. Cindy quickly excused herself, saying she had something to do. Jon claimed he was busy with work and headed off too.
Stephen seemed pleased, turning to Rebecca. “You really know how to keep your team motivated. Everyone at the subsidiary is so dedicated.”
Rebecca forced a laugh, feeling a pang of sympathy for Stephen. His sister and his best friend had just hooked up, and he had no idea.
“Oh, by the way, about the Sunforge Tech product launch—we’ve scheduled it for March sixteenth. I just found out NovaStack Cloud’s launch is the same day.”
Stephen looked at her, his dark eyes steady. “What do you think?”
Rebecca felt her cheeks warm. “I think we should stick to our own plan and not worry about what anyone else is doing.”
Stephen nodded, looking genuinely satisfied. “I agree with you.”
Rebecca smiled. “Thank you. Will you be there that day?”
Stephen looked apologetic. “I have an important client meeting. I probably won’t be able to make it.”
“That’s okay. We’ve got it covered.”
As they walked back toward the office, Stephen asked about her studies. “Are your interviews done?”
“Yeah, all finished. Just waiting to hear back from the school.”
“I’m sure you’ll get in. I believe in you.”
Rebecca hesitated. It was weird. They weren’t that close, but her boss always seemed to have so much confidence in her.
Sonja smiled. “Everything’s ready. The media’s been notified and should arrive any minute.”
She added, “The launch is being live-streamed too. So by tonight, NovaStack Cloud will be all over social media.”
“Good. Nice work.”
After discovering Rebecca’s real abilities, Bruce had often wondered what could have happened if he hadn’t brought Sonja into the company. Maybe things would have been different.
But today, seeing the bustling crowd and the energy in the room, he felt a sense of relief.
The launch was bound to succeed.
After today, NovaStack Cloud would hit a new growth peak. The IPO was right around the corner.
Once the company went public, his net worth would skyrocket. He’d join Lamont Inc. and make his mom proud. It was just a matter of time.
For years, he and his mother had carried this heavy burden. Now, it felt like it could finally be lifted.
And for that, he had Sonja to thank.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
Can't wait for the next update! 😍...
Honestly, Rebecca's mother needs to be called out for pettiness. At the same time, Rebecca needs to explain her work situation to her mother....
