“Rebecca, seriously, you don’t have to walk me out. I’m totally fine to drive myself!” Cindy grabbed Rebecca’s arm and held on tight.
Rebecca just sighed and held up her hand, spreading her fingers. “How many fingers am I holding up?”
Cindy squinted, then scratched her head, mumbling, “Uh… how many is that? Oh man, I can’t even count. Everything’s blurry.”
Rebecca shook her head. “You really can’t handle your liquor. One drink after another… If anyone saw you, they’d think you were trying to help the bar hit its monthly target.”
Cindy didn’t even care. She just hugged Rebecca’s arm tighter, giggling like a little kid.
“That guy was so gross. If I hadn’t kept drinking, I would’ve thrown up right at the table.”
Rebecca frowned as she remembered tonight’s disaster of a date. She wondered who on earth had set Cindy up with a guy like that. Whoever it was must really have it out for the Duncan family.
She gave Cindy’s shoulder a reassuring pat. “Just wait here, okay? I’ll go get the car.”
“Okay.” Cindy nodded obediently, but as soon as Rebecca let go, her knees buckled and she started to topple backward.
Luckily, someone caught her in time.
Rebecca’s heart jumped as she looked up and saw who it was. “Jon? What are you doing here?”
Jon just nodded, calm as ever. He glanced down at Cindy, who was totally out of it with flushed cheeks and glassy eyes. “I’ll take her home. It’s late, you should get some rest too.”
Rebecca hesitated for a second, but then nodded. The Garfields and Duncans were practically neighbors and had known each other forever. Plus Jon and Stephen were best friends. She definitely trusted Jon.
She helped Cindy into the passenger seat and buckled her in. “Thanks a lot. Sorry for all the trouble.”
The next morning, as soon as Rebecca got to the office, Justin rushed in and knocked on her door, sounding all flustered. “Ms. Harper, NovaStack Cloud just announced their new product launch is on March 16th too. I heard they were planning for the end of March, but now it’s the exact same day as ours.”
“And apparently, they’ve invited way more clients and industry folks than we have. Their event is going to be huge. I’m worried… I mean, what if…”
Rebecca totally got what he was saying. He was afraid their own Sunforge Tech launch would be a ghost town and everyone would laugh at them.
She gave him a calm look. “It’s okay. We’ll stick to our plan and not get distracted by what they’re doing. Besides, if our product is good enough, you don’t need to be scared of a little competition.”
She paused, then added, “Let Jon know we’re having a meeting.”
