The crowd broke into applause at her words.
Rebecca moved smoothly into the official launch of their new product. When she got to the star feature, the automatic interest rate curve model, she paused, letting the tension build. “I know a lot of you are wondering how we managed to secure the patent for this technology. Don’t worry, I’ll explain everything during the Q&A.”
The audience chuckled, their curiosity piqued.
For the next several minutes, everyone was completely drawn in by Rebecca’s presentation. There was a buzz of excitement in the room, almost impossible to contain. This product was a game-changer, the kind that could turn the entire fintech industry on its head. People were already thinking, this was a once-in-a-lifetime moment. Who was behind this incredible design? Someone was definitely going to ask that later.
The first part of the presentation wrapped up quickly. Rebecca smiled, bowed, and thanked everyone again for being there.
Then, out of nowhere, her eyes met someone’s in the front row. A man sat quietly in the corner, just out of the spotlight, his hands coming together in steady applause. His features were gentle, his gaze full of admiration. Rebecca froze, caught off guard.
She watched him mouth something in her direction. It took her a second to figure it out. “Amazing.”
Rebecca felt her ears get hot and her nose tingle. She almost wanted to cry, and she didn’t even know why. He always said he couldn’t make it, yet he always managed to surprise her.
She handed the mic to Jon and hurried down to the front row, sniffling a little. “Mr. Duncan, what are you doing here? Weren’t you supposed to meet an important client?”
He smiled. “I was. And I already did.”
Rebecca blinked, confused. That’s when she noticed the man sitting next to him. Her jaw dropped. “Mr. Matthew?!” It didn’t seem real. The head of Union Currency was right here?
Wait. Was Mr. Matthew the important client her boss had mentioned? But hadn’t Union Currency already signed with NovaStack Cloud?
Sunforge Tech’s launch was buzzing with excitement, but over at the Royal Hotel next door, it was a total mess.
Some clients there had caught the Sunforge Tech presentation on livestream. When they heard Rebecca introduce the automatic interest rate curve model, their eyes almost popped out of their heads.
NovaStack Cloud had promised that patent would be theirs, and that the new product would feature it. Later, he said the patent owner, Dr. Palmer, refused to sell, so they had to switch gears.
Now everyone knew the truth. Sunforge Tech had bought the patent.
People started scrambling. The news raced through group chats, spreading faster than anyone could keep up. In no time, almost everyone at the event knew exactly what had happened.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
