A heavy, suffocating feeling pressed against Bruce’s chest. He pushed himself up from his seat and strode toward the door.
“Bruce...” Sonja’s voice caught him, soft and uncertain. She held her breath and bit her lip. “I don’t think that picture is real.”
Bruce stopped and turned back, his words cold and sharp. “Haven’t you embarrassed yourself enough already?”
He didn’t wait for a reply. He just walked away, not even glancing back.
Sonja froze, her whole body tense, her face drained of color. She didn’t care if the image was real or not anymore. All that mattered was catching up to him, so she rushed after him, her heart pounding.
After the launch, the whole crowd shifted to the banquet hall for the reception. People drifted around with champagne glasses, congratulating Stephen and, of course, piling on compliments for Rebecca.
Rebecca kept her smile polite and humble. “Oh, it’s nothing. Really, it’s all because of Mr. Duncan’s great leadership.”
Stephen arched an eyebrow at her. “Is that so? I don’t remember doing anything special.”
Rebecca’s cheeks flushed faintly. “You’re just being modest.”
Stephen grinned, clearly amused by her awkwardness. He gave her a break and tipped his chin toward a man across the room. “That’s Matthew from Union Currency. Let’s go say hi.”
Rebecca couldn’t help but whisper, “Why is Matthew here today? Didn’t Union Currency already sign with NovaStack Cloud?”
She remembered making that deal herself. It still felt fresh in her mind.
Stephen’s eyes flashed with something unreadable. He pressed his lips together, thinking. “Well, I just invited him on a whim. Didn’t expect him to actually show up.”
So that was it. Matthew was making sure to personally host an important client. Everything made sense now.
She and Stephen made their way across the room. Rebecca reached out with a friendly smile. “Matthew, hi, I’m Rebecca. Do you remember me?”
Matthew’s face lit up as he shook her hand. “Of course I remember you. Your communication skills and professionalism are unforgettable.”
Rebecca smiled, a hint of pride in her voice. “Thank you. That means a lot.”
She thought it would just be another round of polite business talk, but then Matthew’s expression turned serious. “That’s why Union Currency wants to keep working with you. Would you consider taking us on again?”
