At ten in the morning, Sunforge Tech was buzzing. In the conference room, the teams from Union Currency and Sunforge Tech sat facing each other across a long table. Once everyone had agreed on the final contract terms, the secretary handed Matthew an expensive pen.
Rebecca and her team barely breathed as he signed. Two quick strokes and it was done.
Rebecca let out a slow breath, stood up, and reached out to shake Matthew’s hand again. “Looking forward to working together.”
“Same here.” Matthew’s grip was firm, his smile genuine.
She wanted to invite him to lunch, but Matthew apologized, saying he had pressing work at his company and a flight to catch that morning. He promised they’d find time for a meal next time. Rebecca walked him all the way to the front doors.
Landing the Union Currency deal still felt unreal, like she’d woken up in someone else’s life.
She thought back to her days at NovaStack Cloud, when trying to win Matthew over had felt like chasing a ghost. It had taken her more than a year to even meet him face to face. After that, she spent two more years arranging dinners, going over contracts, negotiating every detail. It took three years, start to finish, just to pull it off.
But this time, a single product launch had done the trick.
Something about it didn’t add up.
As she opened the car door for Matthew, Rebecca hesitated, then couldn’t hold back anymore. “Can I ask you something? What made you decide to come to our launch? It seemed like you were already set on signing with Sunforge Tech.”
Matthew looked genuinely surprised. “Wasn’t it because Mr. Duncan kept inviting me?”
Kept inviting? That didn’t match what Stephen told her last night. He’d said he’d just mentioned it in passing, and Matthew agreed right away. The two stories clearly didn’t line up.
Rebecca forced a smile. “Oh, really? I didn’t know. He’s really good to us.”
Matthew laughed, giving her shoulder a friendly pat. “I’ve never seen Mr. Duncan go out of his way like this for anyone else. He stopped by my office so many times, it felt like he was wearing me down. I only agreed to come so he’d leave me alone.”
He shrugged, then added, “But I’m glad he did. The launch was fantastic. After I heard your presentation, I’d already made up my mind.”
Rebecca’s mind spun. She couldn’t stop replaying Matthew’s words. I’ve never seen Mr. Duncan go out of his way like this for anyone else.
