Rebecca wasn’t about to waste another second on Alan. She shot him a cold warning—if he ever harassed her or her mother again, she’d call the police. “You’re a vice president at Campbell Group, right? Imagine if this kind of scandal hit the news. How do you think your rich wife would react?”
Alan went stiff. Lately, he’d been sneaking out early and coming home late, pretending he was meeting clients, but really he was just lurking around Samantha’s apartment complex. Avery had already called him more than once, furious that he was never around. If she ever found out he was visiting his ex-wife and daughter, he could kiss his cushy Campbell family life goodbye.
Still, at that moment, Alan had something even more urgent to worry about. Forgetting all about his daughter, he jumped in his car and sped back to the Campbell estate. He barely made it in time, catching Sonja just as she reached the front door.
“Sonja,” Alan called, wiping sweat from his forehead and forcing a smile. “Just got home?”
Sonja knew exactly why he was there, so she didn’t bother pretending. “Yeah. I just got back from the hospital.”
Alan’s heart skipped. He stepped closer, lowering his voice. “I heard you went to visit…”
He hesitated, not sure if he should come right out and ask. What if Rebecca had made the whole thing up? That girl definitely seemed sharper than Samantha.
Before he could decide, Sonja admitted it herself. “Yes, I went to see your ex-wife today.”
She smiled, calm and gracious. “Alan, it’s not a big deal. My mom and I both know you had a wife and a daughter before you joined the Campbell family. I just happened to see Samantha at the hospital and thought I’d stop in.”
Alan felt such a huge wave of relief he almost couldn’t stand up straight. The secret he’d been so desperate to keep was out, and Sonja didn’t seem to care at all. His eyes stung with tears.
“Sonja, thank you for being so understanding. And your mom…?”
“She knows, too. She understands.”
Alan could barely contain his joy. “That’s great. Really. Please let your mom know there’s nothing more to it. I just wanted to see how they were doing. In my heart, you and your mom matter most.”
With her mother settled, Rebecca went back to work. She had barely sat down when her phone rang. It was Liam.
“Congratulations, Ms. Harper. Thanks to your R&D breakthrough, you’ve been named a Distinguished Technology Talent by the district government. The award ceremony’s next week.”
Rebecca blinked in surprise, then smiled. “Just me? Is Mr. Duncan going too?”
Liam chuckled. “He should be there. He even reminded me to make sure you knew about it.”
Rebecca looked down, trying to hide her happiness. She hadn’t seen Stephen while she was at the hospital, but he’d sent her messages every now and then, checking in on her and her mom.
He really was the best boss she’d ever had.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
