Her voice was soft, barely above a whisper, but there was a sharp edge to it that cut right through. Samantha pressed a hand to her chest, her face twisting with pain. “You… you…” The words barely left her lips before she fainted.
Downstairs, Rebecca had just finished paying the hospital bills and was heading back up. As the elevator doors slid open, she found herself face to face with Sonja.
Rebecca frowned. “Why are you here?”
Sonja’s lips curled into a cool smile. “I heard your mom was sick. Thought I’d come check on her.”
A bad feeling rose in Rebecca’s chest. Without another word, she turned and rushed back to her mother’s room.
When she saw her mother collapsed on the sofa, Rebecca’s tears came all at once. She called for the nurse, her hands trembling.
After the doctors worked on her, Samantha finally woke up, though she looked so fragile lying in that bed. She just stared at Rebecca, silent, tears slipping down her cheeks.
“Mom, did Sonja do something to you? I’m calling the police.” Rebecca grabbed her phone, but before she could dial, her mother reached out and stopped her.
Samantha shook her head, eyes swimming with tears. “There’s no point.”
“Then what did she do?” Rebecca’s voice was raw. “No matter what it is, I won’t let her get away with it.”
Samantha’s tears kept falling. She choked out, “She said Alan is her stepfather. She said she took your fiancé too. I got so angry… I just… I couldn’t take it.”
Rebecca stared at her, shocked. “Alan… the rich family he married into… it’s the Campbells?”
Samantha nodded, her expression full of pain.
Alan looked stunned. He knew Samantha’s collapse was partly his fault. That afternoon, he’d insisted on seeing Rebecca again, and ended up arguing with Samantha. He never thought she’d be so frail, fainting right in front of him. He’d panicked and run off, only finding out which hospital she was in after asking around for days. But he had no idea how Sonja was mixed up in all of this.
He looked confused and licked his lips. “Rebecca, what do you mean? What does Sonja have to do with this? You know who she is, right? She’s…”
“I know exactly who Sonja is. She’s your stepdaughter. She’s the daughter of your rich wife. You can tell her from me, if she ever comes near my mom again, I’ll ruin her. Don’t think her secrets are safe.”
Rebecca could put up with a lot, but her mother was her breaking point. She wasn’t going to let anyone cross that line.
Alan was thrown. “Rebecca, you’ve got it all wrong about Sonja. She wouldn’t do that on purpose.”
It was true, Sonja had never called him Dad, but at home she’d always acted polite. She was a Ph.D. from a top university, smart and capable. Alan just couldn’t believe she’d do something so cruel. Honestly, he couldn’t see any reason why she would.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
Can't wait for the next update! 😍...
Honestly, Rebecca's mother needs to be called out for pettiness. At the same time, Rebecca needs to explain her work situation to her mother....
