Rebecca came to a sudden halt. Sonja’s lips curled up in a satisfied smile, though inside she could barely hold back a mocking laugh. Rebecca just don’t know when to give up. She’s acting all calm and collected on the outside, but deep down, she was still thinking about Bruce. Too bad for her. Bruce was Sonja’s fiancé now, and she wasn’t going to let anyone else get in the way.
Sonja caught up, stepping right in front of Rebecca. She slowly lifted her hand, making sure the diamond ring on her finger caught every bit of light in the hallway. “He gave me this engagement ring. Gorgeous, right? It’s so sparkly.” She waved her left hand around, showing off the diamond like she was a model in a jewelry commercial.
Rebecca stared at the ring, unable to look away. Sonja felt a rush of satisfaction. Nothing tasted sweeter than showing off what someone else wanted but could never have. Go ahead, take a good look. See for yourself how the man you almost married ended up falling for me.
But Sonja wasn’t done. She wanted to dig the knife in a little deeper. “Our families have already talked it all through. We’re getting engaged in two months and married at the end of the year. I’ll make sure you get an invitation.” She smiled, sugar-coating her words. “I mean, you were with Bruce for years. I bet you’ll want to see how happy he is on his big day. And you’re my sister, so of course you should come. It wouldn’t feel right without you.”
Rebecca finally looked away from the ring. Her voice was quiet, almost flat. “Don’t bother sending me an invitation. If you think I’m going to give you a wedding gift, keep dreaming.” She started walking, not sparing Sonja another glance.
Sonja didn’t mind at all. The more Rebecca tried to act unaffected, the more obvious it was that she was hurting. And the more Rebecca hurt, the happier Sonja felt. “You don’t have to bring a gift. Just having you there would make Bruce and me so happy.”
Rebecca paused for a second time. Sonja lifted her chin, her red lips curling into a smug smile. “After all, Bruce would be thrilled to have his ex-girlfriend’s blessing.”
Rebecca’s eyes dropped again, lingering on the diamond ring. “What’s wrong? You like the ring?” Sonja noticed how Rebecca kept staring at it. It made sense. This was something Rebecca had always wanted but never got.
Sonja slipped off the ring, holding it out with a mocking air. “If you like it so much, you can try it on for a bit.”
