The award wasn’t anything special. It was more like a participation trophy, something every major tech company in the district got. Sonja didn’t care, though. As long as Stephen was the one handing it to her, that was enough.
Her name was called over the speakers. Sonja stood, smoothed her skirt, and walked to the stage. Bruce, sitting beside her, finally tore his eyes from the stage to send her a gentle smile.
But when Sonja got up there, she realized Stephen was gone. She scanned the crowd, only to spot him off to the side, deep in conversation with someone important-looking. Her award, and those for the other minor winners, were being handed out by someone else.
Sonja almost ground her teeth to bits. Why did Rebecca get all the luck? Why did Stephen only hand Rebecca her award? The thought hit her so hard, even she was a little shocked. Did Stephen actually have a crush on Rebecca? No way. She wouldn’t let that happen.
After the ceremony, there was a small reception for all the business elites to mingle. As the winner of the day’s top award, Rebecca barely made it through the entrance before a crowd formed around her, everyone raising their champagne and offering congratulations.
“Congrats,” Sonja said, walking up with her arm looped through Bruce’s, her voice syrupy sweet but painfully fake.
Rebecca’s answer was cool. “Thanks.”
Rebecca’s pride and distance only made Sonja more annoyed. But then, she smiled slyly, like she had a secret. “Got plans for lunch, sis? Your brother-in-law and I want to celebrate your big win with you.”
The words landed with a thud. Even Bruce looked surprised, pausing mid-sip to frown at Sonja. He squeezed her hand. “What do you mean? Stop making things up.”
Sonja just smiled wider, acting innocent. “I’m not making anything up. It’s my fault, really. I never told you about my connection with Rebecca. I only found out recently. Alan is Rebecca’s real dad. Isn’t that wild?”
Sonja’s face turned ed with anger. Someone came by to chat with Bruce right then. He gave Rebecca a long, conflicted look before following the person off to the side.
Rebecca couldn’t be bothered with Sonja anymore. She set down her champagne and headed for the restroom.
But Sonja wasn’t finished. She hurried after Rebecca, heels clicking, eager to get the last word.
“You probably haven’t heard yet. Bruce and I are getting engaged.”
