The restaurant was tucked away just a few blocks from the office, a quiet spot that looked ordinary from the outside but felt exclusive the moment you stepped in.
Mrs. Duncan’s assistant dropped her off at the entrance. While the assistant went to find parking, Rebecca walked in on her own. She barely made it through the door before a waitress approached her with a polite smile. “Are you Ms. Harper?”
Rebecca blinked in surprise. The waitress just smiled and gestured politely, “Your room’s on the second floor. Please, follow me.”
Rebecca couldn’t help thinking this place was full of surprises. Even the waitstaff seemed to know everything. Someone must have given them a heads-up about her appearance. That realization made her stomach twist with nerves.
Why did Mrs. Duncan want to meet her one-on-one anyway? Sunforge Tech wasn’t even a big player. As a subsidiary, it was small, barely a blip on the radar. It didn’t make sense for the chairman to pay it any attention, let alone meet with her. The whole thing felt off.
Rebecca followed the waitress up to the private dining room. “Ms. Harper, please make yourself comfortable. Mrs. Duncan will join you soon.” The waitress left quietly, closing the door behind her.
Rebecca’s heart rate slowed a bit. At least she’d arrived first. It gave her a few moments to collect herself, to steel her nerves.
She’d dealt with her share of challenges in the corporate world. She’d learned to keep her cool, to handle pressure. Still, the thought of meeting Mrs. Duncan had her on edge, and she couldn’t tell if it was because of the woman’s status at the company or because she was Stephen’s mother. Maybe both.
Rebecca shook her head, pushing the thought aside. On the table sat two cups. She poured herself some coffee, breathing in the rich, floral scent. The coffee had to be expensive.
A quiet knock sounded, and the door opened. Mrs. Duncan walked in, every inch the picture of elegance and authority. Rebecca immediately stood and nodded politely. “Hello, Mrs. Duncan.”
Chelsey’s eyes swept over her, taking in every detail. She nodded with a faint smile. “You look even more stunning in person than you do on television.”
Chelsey took her seat, and the waitress served water. She took a delicate sip, lips curving up ever so slightly. “I watched the awards ceremony last month. Congratulations on winning the Most Breakthrough Individual award. That’s quite an achievement.”
“Thank you, but I owe it all to the company. Without such a supportive platform, I doubt I could have won anything on my own,” Rebecca replied with a modest smile.
