“Yes? Why are you just standing there?”
Cindy didn’t answer. She walked with Stephen into the living room.
When Chelsey saw her son come home, she quickly put down her phone and told the housekeeper to bring over the still-warm milk.
“Mom, it’s fine. I’m not hungry.” Stephen slipped off his jacket and headed upstairs to wash up.
A few minutes later, after pulling herself together, Cindy followed him upstairs.
Stephen stepped out of the bathroom in his robe, rubbing a towel through his damp hair. He glanced at his sister and lifted an eyebrow. “You need something?”
Cindy had wanted to ask him if he knew why Jon broke up with his ex, but that felt too obvious. She decided to start somewhere else.
“You gave Rebecca the gift, right? What’d she say? Did she like it?”
Stephen thought back to the way Rebecca’s eyes lit up in the car. He smiled. “Yeah. She liked it.”
“Really? What did you get her? A purse or jewelry?”
“Neither. Just a keychain.”
Cindy stared at him, stunned. Back in the private room, she’d only seen the gift box. The familiar logo had made her assume it was a fancy Hermès bag or some jewelry. She never expected it to be just a keychain.
She looked at him like he was out of his mind. “You had such a good shot to impress her and you just gave her a keychain? Do you even know what girls want?”
Stephen flicked her forehead. “Not everyone’s obsessed with bags like you.”
Then he got serious. “You know how careful she is. If I gave her something expensive, she’d just turn it down.”
Cindy nodded, rubbing her chin. “Actually, I think you get Rebecca even better than I do.”
Out in the hallway, Chelsey overheard everything and felt a chill run down her spine. So her son was already thinking this much about that girl. Even picking a simple gift took so much thought.
If she didn’t step in now, he’d really end up trapped by her.
Chelsey went downstairs right away, picked up her phone, and called her assistant. “Set up a meeting with Rebecca for me tomorrow,” she said quietly. “And keep it under the radar.”
