“Remember to save your data,” Caleb reminded her, his voice half-serious. “Last time, Richard forgot to back up his experiment, and he had to pull three all-nighters just to make up for it.” Right on cue, Richard shuffled in, dark circles under his eyes and a look that said he was done with the world.
Rebecca couldn’t help but laugh. “Don’t worry. I’ve backed up everything—code, data, all of it. Unless someone actually hacks the server, there’s no way we’re losing anything.”
Across the room, Martha watched Caleb and Rebecca chatting, looking way too comfortable together. They had this easy way of talking that made them seem like a couple, totally wrapped up in their own world.
Martha clenched her jaw. Caleb was a nice to her, but as soon as Rebecca showed up, it was like she disappeared. If Martha wanted Caleb back, she needed Rebecca gone. And if Rebecca’s patent vanished, so would her chances here. A sly smile tugged at Martha’s lips. Rebecca, you’re about to have your last afternoon on this project.
Lunch went by like it always did. Rebecca and Caleb ate together in the cafeteria, then walked through the park, laughing about nothing. When they got back to the office, the mood had changed. Everyone looked worried, heads bent over laptops, voices low.
Caleb frowned and walked over. “What’s going on? Did something happen?”
One of the students looked up, anxious. “Caleb, it’s bad. We came back from lunch and someone’s hacked the server. A bunch of our code and data is gone. We’re trying to get it back, but...”
Caleb’s eyes widened. “What? How is that even possible?”
Everyone here knew computers inside out, and security was their thing. They’d put up every firewall they could think of, with software safer than most companies. Getting hacked should have been impossible.
But there was no time to figure out what went wrong now.
“Rebecca, check your test data, fast,” Caleb said.
Rebecca nodded and hurried to her desk. She clicked into her files... then froze. Everything was gone. It’s not just today’s work. Months of effort was all wiped clean.
