Martha, standing at the edge of the group, suddenly clenched her fists and called out, “Hey, the security camera light isn’t even on. Is it broken or something?”
Someone else chimed in, “You know, there’s no footage today, but doesn’t mean one of us did it. Maybe the camera was busted. No one’s paid attention to it since we moved in.”
It didn’t take long before someone grabbed a ladder and they started checking each camera. “You’ve got to be kidding. These cameras are just here for show. Not a single one works. They’re all dead.”
Everyone around let out a breath they’d been holding. At least it didn’t look like an inside job. Most people hadn’t lost much anyway, just a day or two’s worth of work. Once the initial shock wore off, everyone seemed to calm down pretty quickly.
Except Rebecca.
Her loss was on a whole different level. Something about this just didn’t sit right with her. The project was supposed to be top secret. Outside of their own team, only a handful of investors knew any details. The three companies backing them only cared about the results. They’d never do something as underhanded as this. But there was one person who might.
Even if Sonja wanted payback and had the skills, she’d still need help from someone on the inside.
Rebecca watched the others bustling around and took a steadying breath. She walked over to Caleb and said quietly, “Caleb, I want to call the police. Will you back me up?”
Caleb’s face flushed. For a second, he was embarrassed. But then he straightened, pushing his glasses up. “My feelings for Rebecca aren’t the point. We only lost a day or two of work. We can pull an all-nighter and catch up. But Rebecca lost everything she’s been working on for years. You all know how hard she’s worked since joining the team.”
The way he kept saying Rebecca’s name grated on Martha’s nerves. She snapped, “Fine, go call the police. Let’s get the whole university and all the department heads involved. Let them see just how useless Dr. Palmer’s star students really are.”
She looked around at everyone. “We’re supposed to be the best. The pride of Larkhaven College, the pride of Dr. Palmer. And now our project gets hacked like it’s nothing. Is that something we should brag about? When this gets out, how are we supposed to face anyone? How’s the professor supposed to face anyone? And the school, those administrators only care about their image. If this blows up, do you really think they’ll let us graduate without trouble?”

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
