“Seriously, how do we run into those two everywhere? I’m starting to think we’re being followed.” Cindy made sure her voice carried for everyone to hear.

Bruce and Sonja both caught the jab, but Cindy’s the daughter of the Duncan family, and neither dared to fire back. They just simmered in silence.

Sonja’s gaze swept the group and landed on Stephen. For a split second, genuine surprise flickered in her eyes. Why was Stephen here with the Sunforge Tech crew? Her eyes darted to Rebecca, taking in the way she and Stephen stood close together. Way too close, if you asked Sonja. Something about it made her jaw clench.

Looping her arm through Bruce’s, Sonja strode up to Stephen, pretending Rebecca didn’t even exist. “Mr. Duncan, what a coincidence. You’re here for a team event too?”

Stephen barely glanced her way. “Yeah.” His voice was flat, icy. Sonja had seen how warmly he looked at Rebecca just a moment ago, but now he couldn’t even be bothered to fake a smile for her. The sting of it made her chest tighten.

She refused to let it show. Cool as ever, Sonja reached into her purse and pulled out two envelopes. “Mr. Duncan, Ms. Duncan, Bruce and I are getting engaged next month. Here’s your invitation. We’d love for you both to join us for the celebration.”

Stephen and Cindy took the invitations without much reaction, just a quick, empty “Congratulations.” No promise to come. No refusal either.

As the group started to move on, Sonja suddenly called out to Rebecca. She made a big show of tucking her long hair over her shoulder, her fingers flashing with a diamond ring so bright it could blind someone. It’s definitely not the same one from last time.

Rebecca lifted an eyebrow, unimpressed. So Sonja wanted to brag. Too bad Rebecca was the wrong person for that.

“Hey, Rebecca, when are you and your mother free? We should all get together for a family dinner. It’s the perfect time for her to meet your future brother-in-law. We’ll be family soon, after all.” Sonja smiled sweetly, but she couldn’t hide the way she lingered on the words “brother-in-law.”
