She wasn’t done yet. Storming up to Bruce, she let out a sharp laugh. “Or what, you’re still hung up on her? Don’t want to be her brother-in-law, is that it?”
Bruce felt a wave of exhaustion hit him, leaving him drained. Lately, he had been doing everything he could to please Sonja, giving in to whatever she wanted, just to fix things between them. Their relationship was finally getting back on track, but now, thanks to Rebecca, they were fighting again.
He didn’t bother answering. He just closed his eyes, letting himself slip back to a different time.
He missed the days before Sonja came back, when it was just him and Rebecca. Back then, Rebecca had always been gentle and thoughtful, always on his side. She would put him first, sacrificing herself if she had to.
Things weren’t so simple anymore...
Later, when everyone from NovaStack Cloud gathered downstairs for the team-building event, it was obvious to everyone that Bruce and Sonja were in a terrible mood. Anyone could tell they had just been fighting.
The group chat started buzzing with gossip right away.
People were already speculating about the drama between Bruce, Sonja and Rebecca. Lots of people had caught those loaded words, “sister” and “brother-in-law.”
Meanwhile, over at Sunforge Tech, everyone met up outside after lunch.
This time, the company had actually hired a professional event planner for the offsite. There was no boring drills, no endless speeches from management. It was just food, games, and fun.
That afternoon, they kicked things off with a team game.
The host stood at the front, mic in hand, explaining the rules. “Six people per team. Each team has to finish as many tasks as possible using the mini-app. The tasks are spread out all over the island. You’ve got four hours. The top three teams get big prizes.”
He barely finished speaking before someone shouted, “What kind of prizes?”
Everyone cracked up, but their eyes were lit up with excitement.
The host just grinned. “All I can say is, the prizes are worth anywhere from a few thousand to ten thousand dollars. The rest is a surprise until the end.”
A chorus of “Whoa!” went up from the crowd. Suddenly, everyone looked like they were ready to fight to the finish, hungry for those prizes.
People didn’t wait for the host to say go. They started forming teams right away.
Of course, no one wanted to team up with the higher-ups.
Rebecca glanced around and realized there were only five people left: herself, Stephen, Jon, Cindy, and Liam.
