“Bruce, you know we’re about to get engaged. What if something happens on the hike and it messes up our engagement?” Sonja didn’t want to hear another word about it. She was determined to drive.
Bruce’s face was stone cold, but he just let her go with it.
Sonja opened the car door and looked over at Morris and Paul. “So, are you two coming with me, or are you hiking with everyone else?”
Morris hesitated. There was no way he was hiking. He’d never put up with that kind of suffering. But if he drove, he’d miss out on all the fun.
He glanced at Paul. “What do you think, Paul?”
Paul wasn’t even paying attention. He was staring out at the boats bobbing on the water. “I want to go fishing.”
Morris perked up. “Honestly, that sounds pretty good.”
Sonja scoffed. “Yeah, sure, you want to fish. You really just want to see her.”
She shut the car door with a bang and drove off.
Morris scratched his head. “Who’s ‘her’? Is that girl you like here too? That doesn’t make any sense. I thought this was just a company retreat for NovaStack Cloud and Sunforge Tech.”
Bruce turned to look at Paul, his dark eyes focused and unblinking.
Paul still didn’t say a word. He just walked down to the shore and started asking a boatman about the price to go fishing.
Morris didn’t even hesitate. He hurried after him, and the two of them boarded the fishing boat together.
Once he’d caught his breath, Morris sidled up to Paul and nudged him with his elbow. “So, who’s this girl Sonja mentioned? Is it the one you are interested in?”
Paul leaned against the boat rail, the salty breeze ruffling his hair. For a moment, he looked out at the waves, then finally spoke. “Yeah.”
