“What did you say to her?” Morris asked, his voice a mix of curiosity and suspicion. “What could you two possibly have to talk about? Didn’t she get back at Bruce a while ago? I heard NovaStack Cloud lost a ton because of her. You should keep your distance. She’s too calculating.”
Paul frowned, but he didn’t bother to explain. He just said, “I’m going upstairs to drop off my bags.”
Morris rubbed his chin, muttering to himself, “Paul’s been acting weird lately. He never wants to go out with us anymore, but he jumped at the chance to come here. I just found out he likes the ocean.”
Other people might have been clueless, but Sonja saw right through it all. She let out a cold little sneer. Paul hadn’t come for the three of them. He wasn’t here for the sea either. He was here for Rebecca. The way he’d looked at her just now—so intense, so in love—it actually made Sonja feel sick just thinking about it.
“Forget about him. Let’s get some breakfast,” Sonja said, her tone cutting Morris off before he could keep rambling.
Morris fell silent. Apparently, Paul wasn’t the only one who’d changed. Sonja had changed a lot too.
Today, Sunforge Tech’s group activity was a fishing trip out at sea. The company wasn’t big, so they only needed two boats. For a lot of people, it was their first time fishing on the ocean, and everyone looked so excited.
Rebecca was more careful this time. She wore a baseball cap and blended in with the regular employees. Once the headcount looked good, she nudged the boss to get the boat moving.
By the time they set off, Stephen finally noticed that he and Rebecca weren’t even on the same boat. The sun was especially bright, but the look in his eyes just kept getting dimmer.
“Where’s Rebecca? Why isn’t she on our boat?” Cindy rushed over, looking around for her.
Stephen pressed his lips together, let out a noncommittal sound, and walked off toward the deck, his figure looking so alone.
Cindy couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. Had something happened between Stephen and Rebecca?
Meanwhile, things at NovaStack Cloud weren’t so cheerful. After breakfast, everyone was called out to the lawn. When they heard that today’s activity was a twenty-kilometer hike, everyone just stared in disbelief. But after Sonja’s sour expression yesterday, no one dared say anything out loud. Complaints only came up in the new, private group chat.
