Cindy pouted. “How is that not true? He told me himself.” The truth was, Cindy had carried this little burden for years. Deep down, she always suspected that Jon moved to the Capital right after graduation just to avoid her. When she said she had a crush on him, it must have really thrown him for a loop.
“He actually said that to you?” Chelsey looked genuinely surprised, then let out a long sigh. “Jon always thinks about everyone else before himself.”
The way her mom said that made Cindy pause. Something was off. There had to be more to the story. Instantly, her shoulders squared up. “Mom, don’t keep me guessing. Tell me everything you know, right now.”
Chelsey took her time with her tea, giving Cindy a teasing smile. “Didn’t you say you didn’t want to marry Jon? Why are you suddenly so interested?”
Cindy shot her a look. “You started this. Now I am all curious.”
Chelsey just smiled, letting Cindy have her denial. “You remember, right? Jon’s father Charlie was married before he got together with Nina. He had a son from that marriage, which was Jon’s older brother. For years, everyone thought the Garfield family was the perfect happy family. But it wasn’t really like that.”
“Jon’s brother grew up with his birth mom telling him all kinds of things, so he was always wary of Nina and Jon. No matter how hard Nina tried to get close to him, he just didn’t trust her. As Jon got older, things at home just got heavier. The big reason was that Jon’s brother kept worrying the family business would end up with Nina and Jon.”
“Jon’s always been a good kid. He knew what his brother was afraid of, so he went to his dad and said he didn’t want to join the family company. He didn’t even go along with Nina’s plan for him to study business. Instead, he went abroad and did computer science. The year he finished his master’s degree was right when the company was passing from his dad to his brother. Jon moved to the Capital to avoid any drama. These last couple of years, his brother’s fully in charge and Nina’s health isn’t great, so Jon finally felt like he could come back.”
“Cindy? Cindy? You were the one begging me to tell you, and now you’re just zoning out.”
Chelsey’s voice snapped Cindy out of her thoughts. She bit her lip, her eyes full of surprise and confusion, but mostly, she just felt so bad for Jon. The Jon everyone saw was always calm and put-together, never showing a hint of stress. No one knew he’d gone through so much behind the scenes.
Cindy sniffed, then asked, “So why did he break up with his ex-girlfriend?”
