Stephen was way too close. Rebecca’s whole body tensed, her instincts screaming that this was all kinds of wrong. She turned sideways, took a couple steps back, and sucked in a steadying breath. “Of course not,” she managed, trying to keep things cool.

She reached for the car door, but Stephen’s hand landed over hers, stopping her again.

Rebecca blinked at him, totally lost. “Mr. Duncan, isn’t your date still waiting inside? You can’t just leave her there, can you?”

Whatever tension was in his face melted away. He almost smiled. “You thought she was my date?”

“She isn’t?” Rebecca asked, her eyebrows shooting up.

“How did you get that idea? I’m curious, really. Tell me.”

Rebecca opened her mouth, then closed it. “I…” she started, but honestly, what did it matter to her?

Before she could say more, a car horn blasted behind them. A window rolled down and a grumpy middle-aged guy called out, “If you want to flirt, do it at home. Don’t block the parking lot!”

Rebecca’s cheeks flamed with embarrassment. She turned back to Stephen. “Mr. Duncan, I really need to go. You should head back.”

He let go, giving her a slow nod before finally taking a step away. Suddenly, the tight space around her seemed to breathe again.

But then Stephen just walked around the car and opened the passenger door, settling right into the seat beside hers.

Rebecca stared, completely thrown. “What are you doing?”

He looked right at her, totally unfazed. “I had a few drinks. It’s not safe for me to drive. Mind giving me a ride?”

Another impatient honk echoed behind them. Rebecca didn’t have time to argue. She slid into the driver’s seat and started up the car.

Once she’d merged onto the main road, she risked a glance at him. “Are you sure you don’t have to go back?”

Stephen smirked, shaking his head in disbelief. “What, are you really that eager for me to leave?”

“No… that’s not it,” she said, her voice small.
