Time slipped by, impossible to measure. Will drifted off, completely satisfied, lost in deep sleep. Lottie lay there, limp and exhausted, every inch of her body aching like she’d been tossed aside. She felt like a rag doll, barely holding herself together.
She lowered her gaze to her belly, reaching out with a shaky hand to touch the gentle curve. A small, tired smile tugged at her lips.
At least her baby was still safe. That was the only thing she had left now.
Lottie squeezed her eyes shut, pain radiating through every part of her. Her mind wandered back to her days with the Harper family. If only she hadn’t fallen out with Rebecca. Maybe Rebecca and her mom would have taken her in. And even further back—if she’d never met Paul. If she hadn’t been taken in by the Bernan family. So many what-ifs. None of them mattered now. Big, hot tears slid down her cheeks, soaking the sheets beneath her.
The next morning, when Lottie finally opened her eyes, Will was already dressed sharply, ready to go downstairs.
“Wait,” Lottie called out, struggling to sit up as her muscles protested. “Last night, you said you’d let me leave today. You promised. Keep your word.”
Will let out a short laugh, licking his lips. “Yeah, I remember. Haven’t had that much fun in a long time. I said I’d let you go, and I will. But… like this?”
He looked her up and down, his eyes lingering. “You planning to walk out of here naked?”
Lottie’s voice came out rough and tired. “Can’t you lend me some clothes?”
Surprisingly, Will didn’t argue. He pulled a white shirt and a pair of loose pants from his closet and tossed them her way.
Lottie winced as she got dressed, then stood in front of him, clutching the borrowed clothes around her.
“Whose baby is it?” Will asked, his eyes narrowing. The clothes were big, but somehow her belly looked even more obvious now. Last night, he’d found her pregnant body thrilling, but now the sight just seemed to bother him.
Lottie turned away, her voice flat. “It’s not yours. That’s all you need to know.”
Will scoffed. “I figured.”
He started down the stairs, but Lottie called after him, “Last night… was everything you said the truth?”
He paused. “What are you talking about?”
“Sonja. You said… she…” Just saying the name made Lottie’s hands shake. Her stomach twisted like she was going to be sick.
