Lottie pulled out her phone and stared at the screen. The balance wasn’t even close to enough for the cab fare.

She ducked her head, cheeks burning. “Sorry, sir. I... I forgot my wallet.”

The driver’s glare could have burned a hole through the seat. “You kidding me? You come all this way and now you say you don’t have money? Are you out of your mind?”

He looked her up and down, clearly remembering where he’d picked her up. His voice dripped with contempt. “Didn’t you just get off work. How are you still broke? Who are you trying to fool?”

Lottie felt her eyes sting with angry tears. “I’m not! It’s not what uou think!”

The driver jerked back, surprised. “Still lying? Just look at those bruises. Anyone with half a brain knows where you got them.”

Lottie couldn’t hold it together anymore.

All the pain she’d tried so hard to bury came rushing back.

So this was it. No matter how hard she tried to cover them, those marks would never really go away.

She stepped out of the car, moving like a marionette, every step toward the NovaStack Cloud building stiff and automatic.

Soon. Almost there. Just across the crosswalk and it would all be over.

It would finally end.

She glanced down, hand resting on her stomach, a sad smile flickering across her lips.
