After Alan made a verbal deal with Leah, his mind was stuck on one thing: money. Five million. It kept repeating in his head. Where was he supposed to get that kind of cash?
He was worn out, running on empty. In a last-ditch effort, Alan went to Avery to ask for all the back pay he was owed, only to get chewed out instead. “You’ve been living off the Campbell family for years, eating our food, sleeping under our roof. Your salary barely covers your expenses. What makes you think there’s any extra left for you?”
Alan mumbled, “Then… could I get an advance on my next ten years’ salary?”
Avery shot him a look. “What, are you planning to go without food and water for the next decade? Alan, don’t think I don’t know what you’re trying to do. You want to send money to the Harper family for child support? Find a way that doesn’t involve money. Figure it out.”
Alan kept his frustration to himself. What other way was there? He couldn’t even get close enough to see Rebecca. The last time he tried, he ended up stuck in a detention center for three days.
Clearly, Avery was no help. That road was closed.
He tried thinking of other options. Maybe he could borrow money from his colleagues or subordinates, but he’d never live it down. He might have the title of Vice President, but he knew what people whispered behind his back. That he was just some guy who rode his wife’s status. If he started asking for loans, he could only imagine the stories people would tell.
And if Avery ever found out he was borrowing money, she’d tear into him all over again.
After going in circles, Alan started considering a bank loan. He knew a loan officer, so he set up a meeting right away.
The loan officer arrived, all smiles, but his face changed when Alan said he wanted a personal loan for five million.
Alan was desperate. “Can you do it or not? Just tell me straight.”
The loan officer didn’t sugarcoat it. “Alan, that’s a huge amount. To get that kind of loan, you’d need to put up collateral. Do you have any assets to mortgage?”
Alan went pale. “No, nothing.”
The loan officer tried to help. “You could try applying for a loan through the company. Once the money’s in, the bank won’t care what you do with it.”
