“Yeah.” Rebecca’s reply was barely more than a whisper. She didn’t say anything else.
Lottie gripped her phone, her words careful and a little shaky. “We haven’t seen each other in so long. Are you… do you have time tomorrow? I’d really like to see you.”
She could feel her eyes start to sting, tears threatening. She pressed on, her voice softer. “I’m getting married. I thought… maybe we could meet.”
Rebecca sounded surprised. She paused, then said, “Alright. I’m free tomorrow at five.”
The next afternoon, right on time, they met up.
They picked a dessert place downtown, the kind that was always blowing up on social media.
Lottie had always loved these trendy spots.
By the time Rebecca arrived, Lottie had already snagged a table and ordered for both of them.
“I got you black tea and your favorite lemon muffin,” Lottie said as Rebecca sat down. She slid the plate across the table and looked at her hopefully. “Come on. Try it. This place is famous for them.”
Rebecca glanced at the muffin. Honestly, she didn’t really like this kind of sweet stuff anymore.
“So, why did you want to see me?” she asked, smoothly steering the conversation away.
Lottie gave a sad little smile.
So Rebecca didn’t like lemon muffins anymore. When had that changed? Maybe she’d stopped caring for them long before their fight and Lottie had just never noticed.
Lottie took a deep breath. When she looked up again, her eyes were already shiny with tears.
“Rebecca, I’m sorry. I owe you and your mom an apology. I know I hurt you both, and it was all my fault. I messed up, really badly, I…” Her words tangled with her sobs.
She hurried to add, “Don’t worry, I’m not saying this because I want your forgiveness. I know I don’t deserve that after everything. I just… I needed to say sorry to your face. I’m really, really sorry.”
By then, Lottie could barely get the words out through her tears.
Rebecca watched her, her expression shifting. There was surprise, pain, a little bitterness, and maybe just a touch of relief.
She’d already noticed that Lottie’s stomach was flat. The baby was gone.
