Their eyes met, and they both broke into smiles they couldn't hide.
Rebecca wanted to go over and say a few words to him, but the thought of her mother’s disapproving look made her hesitate. She came up with an excuse instead. “Mom, I’m going to the restroom. If you need me, just call.”
The banquet hall was packed, and with all those people around, she wasn’t worried that Sonja would try anything.
Stephen watched as Rebecca headed towards the restroom. He couldn’t help but smile, then set his champagne down, apologized quietly to the group he was with, and followed her out.
He spotted Rebecca right away in the hallway.
He picked up his pace, caught up to her, and gently pulled her into his arms. Without missing a beat, he pushed open the fire escape door. The door closed behind them with a soft thud, and suddenly, Rebecca was pressed tightly against his chest.
Her heart was racing. “You scared me.”
Stephen kissed her on the forehead. “What can I do? I’m still on probation, so we have to sneak around.” There was a playful hint of complaint in his voice.
“Why are you here? Didn’t you say you weren’t coming?” His voice was a little rough, arms tightening around her.
Rebecca finally told him what had happened that morning. “So… that’s why my mom and I decided to stay.”
A sharp look flashed in Stephen’s eyes.
Clearly, he couldn’t let the Sonja situation drag on any longer. It needed to be handled once and for all.
He gently brushed her forehead. “Next time something like this happens, tell me right away. I’ll help you. It’s too risky for you to face it alone.”
Rebecca leaned against his chest, eyes closed, and nodded. “Okay. I will.”
They lingered for a few more minutes, talking quietly, before heading back out. Luckily, the area outside the restroom was empty, so no one saw them.
When they returned to the banquet hall, Rebecca looked around. “Where’s Cindy? I haven’t seen her.”
Stephen gave a helpless smile. “She’s surrounded by a bunch of socialites. I’ll ask her to come find you later.”
Rebecca followed the direction of his gaze. Sure enough, Cindy was caught in the middle of a group of well-dressed girls, all chatting nonstop.
Cindy looked visibly annoyed, even from far away.
Rebecca instantly looked away, feeling a little embarrassed.
Shawn didn’t seem to mind. He got up and poured her a glass of water. “What brings you here? Knowing how you feel about those two, I didn’t think you’d show up just to torture yourself.”
Rebecca hesitated for a second.
She took the glass and thanked him quietly.
Shawn was complicated for her now. Ever since she found out he’d been helping Sonja, she felt like she had no choice but to keep her distance.
So, she came up with a random excuse. “Just here to meet some clients.”
It sounded weak, but it was the best she could do.
Shawn paused, clearly seeing through her answer, but he just smiled and played along. “That’s so you, Ms. Harper. With all of Coralbridge’s finest here, you couldn’t ask for a better crowd to network with.”
He added, “Oh, and I heard Sunforge Tech just signed Coralbridge Bank as a big client. I haven’t had the chance to congratulate you yet.”

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
