Her eye makeup was a mess from crying, so she had to start all over again. That meant she’d be running even later.
Morris sat off to the side, his brow never relaxing for a second. After a while, he finally spoke up. “What’s really going on between you and Bruce?”
He’d always thought Sonja and Bruce were the perfect couple, the kind everyone else envied. He pictured them getting married and becoming everyone’s idea of what a couple should be. But what he’d just seen had completely thrown him. Maybe things between Sonja and Bruce weren’t nearly as perfect as he’d believed.
Sonja’s face was calm, but her fists were clenched tight in her lap. She spoke through gritted teeth. “He’s never gotten over Rebecca. How could I ever be okay with that?”
Morris blinked in surprise. Bruce was still hung up on Rebecca? That didn’t make sense. Back when the two of them were together, Bruce never seemed to treat Rebecca all that well, so how could he still be stuck on her after all this time? Maybe Sonja was just being jealous, reading too much into things.
He tried to ask gently, “How do you know? I mean, Bruce always seemed to care more about you.”
Sonja’s answer was sharp. “He’s called out that bitch’s name in his sleep, more than once.”
Morris was left speechless. That explained why Sonja had just said those pointed things in front of Rebecca. She was desperate to prove that she and Bruce were happy, that they were really in love, that they were better off than Rebecca ever was. People always try to prove the thing they lack the most.
Morris wandered out to the balcony, lit a cigarette and stared into the night. He thought about the four of them and all the memories they’d shared growing up. They’d always been close, but now it felt like everything had changed. Nothing stayed the same forever. In the end, he couldn’t help blaming Rebecca for how things had turned out. His expression hardened as a thought crossed his mind.
Inside the banquet hall, Paul led Rebecca and her mom to their table. He poured a glass of water for Samantha and said, “Please, have a seat. If you need anything, just ask Rebecca to let me know.”
Samantha beamed at him. “Thank you, Paul. You’re too kind.”
