She lowered her voice. “Shawn and I barely know each other. We just talk about work sometimes. It’s not like what you think.”

After she spoke, she glanced at Shawn. He was focused on the stage, showing her nothing but the back of his head. Rebecca let out a silent breath of relief.

Good. He didn’t hear.

Right then, the bride and groom stepped onto the stage. The lights faded until only a single spotlight shone on them.

Shawn’s lips, usually set in a firm line, formed into a small smile.

He clapped along with everyone else, his face calm and unreadable.

On stage, the emcee launched into his energetic opening. Down below, guests leaned in to gossip.

“I heard Bruce and Sonja grew up together. They’ve known each other for over ten years. That’s real love.”

You know NovaStack Cloud, right? The company Bruce started after he graduated. It’s huge now, worth more than a billion. They’re about to go public. If that happens, this couple will be billionaires.”

While everyone showered the couple with praise, someone in the know couldn’t help but scoff.

“Childhood sweethearts for ten years? That’s not how it went at all. Bruce had a girlfriend before, someone he started dating in college. She stuck with him through seven years of building that company, doing everything from R&D to finding clients. And what did he do? The minute Sonja came back, he dumped his girlfriend and ran off with Sonja.”

“No way, really? I’ve never heard that.”

“Come on. The Lamont family cares too much about their image to let that story out. Plus, his ex was just a regular girl. After using her, he kicked her to the curb. He knew she had no powerful family, no one to back her up. What could she do?”

The story made its way around the table, and soon everyone was feeling sorry for Bruce’s ex-girlfriend.

Rebecca, sitting nearby, heard everything. So did Samantha, whose face grew tense.

Rebecca leaned in to comfort her. “Mom, it’s fine. I stopped caring a long time ago.”

Samantha sighed. “That’s good. Everyone falls for a jerk at least once in their life.”

Rebecca couldn’t help but chuckle. She shot her mom a mischievous wink. “Mom, have you been binging those romance novels again?”
