The emcee was practically running in circles, wiping sweat from his forehead as he rifled through his stack of cue cards. Was this even on the program? No way. What on earth was Sonja up to?

Rebecca sat with her arms crossed, her gaze icy and unwavering as she watched the stage. Samantha, beside her, clenched her jaw. “Seriously, what is she trying to pull?”

Rebecca just shook her head, trying to calm her mother. “It’s alright. We’ll handle whatever comes. I haven’t done anything wrong, so there’s nothing to be afraid of.”

Across the room, Cindy’s heart was thumping so hard it felt like everyone could hear it. “Stephen, what’s Sonja up to now? I’m worried she’s going to go after Rebecca.”

Stephen couldn’t take his eyes off Rebecca. All he wanted was to go to her, hold her, and tell her she’d be okay. But there were too many people watching, and with Samantha right there, he had to hold himself back.

He took a steadying breath, reached over, and patted Cindy on the head. “Don’t worry. Trust Rebecca. She can handle herself.”

Stephen meant it. He had total faith in Rebecca. She always found a way out of tough situations. If there was a wall in her way, she’d climb it or break right through.

Just then, Sonja’s voice echoed across the room. Her eyes looked misty, and her face was the picture of sincerity.

“The girl in the audience called Rebecca Harper. She’s Bruce’s ex-girlfriend and was one of the partners who helped him build his company from scratch.”

“Ms. Harper, thank you.”

Sonja bowed, low and formal, to Rebecca. When she straightened, she flashed a bright, almost too-perfect smile. “Thank you for sending such a wonderful man to me. Before I left the country, Bruce was cold and distant, but when I came back, he was gentle and thoughtful. I’m sure that’s thanks to you. At work, you were dedicated—you brought in so much business for the company. But after you and Bruce broke up, you walked away with nothing. If not for the foundation you built, I never would have achieved so much so quickly after joining. And finally—”

“That’s enough!” Bruce’s face was pale, his voice tight with anger. “Stop it!”

But Sonja seemed lost in her own world. She had forced Rebecca to this engagement party because she wanted to see her angry, desperate or broken. But Rebecca just sat there, cool and untouched by any of it.

Sonja’s hatred burned hotter. What was the point of taking everything from Rebecca if it didn’t hurt her? Why wasn’t she suffering? If she couldn’t make Rebecca miserable, she’d humiliate her instead, right here in front of everyone.
