The sun dipped low and the sky faded to navy, streetlights blinking on in a slow ripple down the avenue. Coralbridge’s nightlife sparkled overhead, and only then did Rebecca finally pull her car into the driveway. She grabbed her phone from the center console. Stephen had texted her a while ago. She hadn’t noticed it until now. Hugging her phone, she typed back with a smile. [I’m home too.]
That was the magic of falling for someone. Even when you couldn’t see them, just knowing they were thinking of you made everything feel warm and sweet.
But the second she stepped out of the car, her smile vanished. Parked a short distance away was a black Maybach she knew all too well. Bruce stood leaning against the hood, a cigarette dangling from his fingers. The pavement near his feet was littered with stubs. He’d clearly been waiting a while.
Rebecca frowned. Shouldn’t he be busy figuring out how to help his fiancée right now? Why did he show up here?
She got her answer fast. Bruce saw her, crushed out his cigarette, and strode toward her. Rebecca couldn’t help but step back, covering her nose and mouth. The smoke was way too strong.
Seeing the disgust in her eyes, Bruce’s heart twisted. He stopped short.
“Rebecca…” His voice was rough and low.
She stepped back again. “Don’t tell me you’re here for me. I thought you’d gotten past this whole lurking-in-the-shadows thing. Guess you haven’t really changed. Does your fiancée know you’re out here?”
She arched a brow. “Oh, right. I almost forgot. Your fiancée’s in so much trouble right now she probably hasn’t even wiped her own mess, let alone worried about you.”
Bruce’s face went pale at her words. He forced a bitter smile. “Rebecca, I’m here to ask you to stop. I know Sonja wasn’t good to you before, and I know you hate Alan, but what you’re doing to her now is just too much. Spreading rumors about a girl like this is cruel.”
Rebecca stared at him, almost wondering if he was speaking another language. She couldn’t make sense of anything he said. She laughed. “Bruce, you’re not seriously blaming me for everything going on with Sonja, are you?”
Bruce frowned deeper. “You’re saying the stuff online has nothing to do with you? Even if you’re not pulling the strings, Cindy is. Either way, it’s all because of you. They are helping you get revenge.”
Rebecca let out a dry laugh. “So what if it is me? If she hasn’t done anything wrong, what does she have to worry about? Only people with guilt are scared.”
Bruce let out a heavy breath. “So it really is you.”
