Rebecca was busy on her phone, texting Stephen back. She barely glanced up when Sonja’s voice cut through the elevator. There was just a quick look at the couple before going right back to her message, completely unbothered.

Sonja’s jaw tightened at being ignored, but then she reconsidered. Maybe Rebecca was just pretending not to care, putting on a brave face.

Sonja lifted her chin and smiled, her eyes sparkling with challenge. “Struck a nerve, did I? Well, sorry, but I can’t help being happy. Even if you are bad-mouthing me behind my back, I don’t care. My husband trusts me completely.”

She looped her arm through Bruce’s, leaning into him like the picture of bliss. “Thank you, Bruce.”

The elevator chimed and the doors slid open on the cinema floor. Rebecca stepped out, never looking back.

Sonja’s smile faded, her mood turning sour. Rebecca’s indifference stung far more than any argument ever could.

She let out a frustrated breath. She’d been ready to call it a night after running into Rebecca, but curiosity got the better of her. Was Rebecca really here all alone?

“Let’s go, Bruce.”

She turned, only to realize Bruce wasn’t beside her. He’d stopped a few steps back, looking distant.

Sonja walked over, puzzled. “What is it?”

Bruce’s eyes were troubled as he met her gaze. “Why do you always have to talk to her like that? You know you two don’t get along, but you keep going out of your way to pick a fight.”
