Stephen was so tall, he blocked out the sunlight, his shadow falling right over her.
Rebecca looked up, caught off guard.
“What are you doing here? Isn’t the Duncan family having their dinner tonight?”
Stephen smiled at her, then shrugged. “They moved it to later.”
She glanced around, making sure no one familiar was nearby. Once she was sure, she stepped closer and lowered her voice. “How did you even know I was on campus?”
“Cindy told me,” he replied.
Oh, right. She had mentioned it at lunch.
Stephen reached for her hand out of habit, but Rebecca dodged, giving him a little look and tilting her chin toward the crowds. They needed to be careful. Someone they knew could show up at any time.
Stephen let out a silent sigh. For a second, he really regretted agreeing to keep things secret. She was amazing. He should be telling the whole world she was his. But since they’d already started this way, he couldn’t break his promise now. All he could do was hope they’d go public soon.
“Where do you want to go?” Stephen watched her, noticing how she’d been lingering, looking a bit conflicted.
Rebecca gazed up at him. “I kind of want to visit Dr. Palmer. It’s been a while since I’ve seen him.”
“Alright, let’s go.”
They walked together toward the back gate, crossed the street, and slipped into a narrow alley. No one else was around.
Stephen glanced down and, without hesitation, slid his right hand into her left, wrapping it gently.
Rebecca’s face flushed bright red. “Hey…” she whispered, sneaking a quick look over her shoulder.
“I checked. No one’s here,” Stephen said, grinning, refusing to let go.
Shawn leaned his elbow on the window, a half-smirk on his face. “So Bruce finally decided to use his own people for once. Keep everything quiet on our end. Don’t let anything slip. We’re close. The Campbell family is nearly finished.”
The voice on the other end sounded respectful. “Yes, Shawn.”
After hanging up, Shawn stared straight ahead. His mouth was still curled in a cold smile, but his eyes had turned sharp and ruthless.
Bruce, you only have yourself to blame. You are too dumb to see her true colors. You deserve to be lied to and played.
You don’t deserve anything good. You definitely don’t deserve happiness.
Shawn glanced in the rearview mirror and saw Rebecca beside Stephen, her face lit up with a smile. For a moment, his heart—usually so hard—softened.
Whoever she chose, as long as she was happy, that was enough for him.
