“You…” George’s hands shook with anger. “That’s not the same. That night was too rushed. We didn’t even get to make most of Brett’s favorite dishes.”
As soon as he said that, Cindy and Chelsey both looked upset.
George realized he’d put his foot in his mouth.
Right then, Brett stood up. “Grandpa, since Stephen is busy, why don’t we just start?”
He turned to the kitchen. “Please bring out the food.”
George managed a small smile. “Brett always knows what to do.”
Suddenly, the sound of a chair scraping across the floor cut through the tension. Cindy grabbed her purse and stormed toward the door. “I’m already full from snacks. I have plans with friends. Bye.”
George’s face turned red with fury. He slammed his hand on the table. “Is everyone just trying to go against me today?”
He glared at Chelsey, pain and disappointment in his voice. “Chelsey, look at your children. Is this how you raised them? Both of them acting like this?”
Chelsey had already been biting back her anger. Now, with George’s accusation, she couldn’t hold it in any longer. The gentle look on her face disappeared, replaced by something colder.
“Dad, Stephen and Cindy are almost thirty. I don’t know what else you expect me to do. If you want to blame someone, blame me for having bad luck. My husband died young, and I’ve been carrying this family on my own ever since.”
The room went quiet.
The servants and the butler all kept their heads down, moving carefully, barely breathing.
That topic was off-limits in the Duncan family. No one ever brought it up in front of George.
George’s eyes grew red, sadness clouding his face.
After a long pause, he waved his hand as if to brush it all away. “Fine. I know you all hold some resentment. Chelsey, do you blame me, too? For getting involved in the company?”
Chelsey struggled to keep her voice even. “Shouldn’t you have talked to us first, Dad? Why did you go straight to HR and leave us out?”
“Honestly, what you did really hurt me and the kids. The three of us have given so much to this company, but we can’t even get a little respect.”
