Her mind went completely blank for a few seconds before she finally managed to ask, “What did you just say?”
Jon pulled up a chair and sat right next to her. “I know my dad and my brother. They never give up until they get what they want. Even though you turned them down last time, they’re not about to let it go. I’m pretty sure they’ll keep trying, maybe by talking to your mom or just going straight to your grandfather about arranging a marriage between our families. Your mom would definitely put your wishes first, but Grandpa Jaime… I wouldn’t count on it.”
He’d already heard about the tension in the Duncan family, all because Brett came back. No one could say for certain Jaime wouldn’t just lose his mind and start matchmaking for the sake of business.
Jon pressed his lips together. “So, marrying me is honestly the best option.”
Cindy’s thoughts were spinning. One minute, Jon’s words sounded reasonable, and the next, she thought the whole idea was out of this world. Sure, she has a crush on Jon, but getting married before they’d even started dating? That was just crazy.
She grabbed her head, eyes unfocused. “You… you have to give me some time to think about this!”
Jon stood up, then crouched down in front of her, his eyes full of emotion. “Yeah, of course. Take all the time you need. Whenever you figure it out, just come find me.”
Soon after, he quietly closed her door and headed downstairs.
Right then, the maid was coming out with some chicken soup, and Chelsey called out to him, “Jon, have some before you go.”
Jon nodded politely. “Thank you, Aunt Chelsey, but I should head out. I don’t want to bother you.”
Chelsey watched him hurry off, a little confused.
What is that silly boy in such a rush for anyway?
. . .
Bruce had been a mess lately.
The private investigator he’d sent overseas hadn’t found anything. That should have put his mind at ease. It meant Sonja hadn’t lied to him. At this point, he didn’t care about her college bullying scandal, or whether her PhD was real or fake. As long as her personal life was clean, as long as she hadn’t cheated and embarrassed the Lamont family, he could let everything else slide.
