Aside from Cindy, Jon, and Justin, who still had her back, everyone else seemed to be drifting away. The distance between them grew more obvious every day.

Her phone buzzed. The car was here.

Rebecca shook her head, trying to shake off all the messy thoughts crowding her mind.

She turned to look for her ride but realized the car waiting wasn’t the one she’d ordered.

The back window of a Rolls-Royce rolled down. Stephen’s handsome face met her eyes, making her heart skip.

“Get in,” he said, flashing a small smile. There was a gentle kind of authority in his voice, the kind that left no room for argument.

Rebecca folded her umbrella and slid into the back seat. Liam, sitting up front, started the car right away, probably trying to avoid drawing attention.

“You’re off early today,” Rebecca said, smiling at Stephen. Then she caught the look on his face, a hint of frustration in his eyes.

She instantly felt awkward.

Stephen noticed and all the sternness vanished from his face. He let out a soft sigh, then reached over to gently pinch her cheek. “Didn’t drive today?”

Rebecca blinked. “No, my neighbor scraped my car in the parking lot. I dropped it off at the shop to get the paint fixed this morning.”

She said it with that usual clear look in her eyes, completely missing the little bit of jealousy in his tone.

“So you’d rather call a ride than ask your own boyfriend for help?” There was a trace of exasperation in Stephen’s voice.

He stroked her cheek, then pulled her into his arms. “I know you’re used to doing everything on your own, but sometimes, I hope you would need me. Rebecca, it actually makes me happy when you let me help.”

Rebecca finally realized why he’d looked upset.
