Questions flew at Rebecca one after another, and her confusion quickly turned to irritation. She braced herself, shooting Paul a sharp look. “I don't need to know about his past. Everyone has one. Mine’s not exactly pretty either. What matters is right now, he’s great, and he really likes me. That’s enough for me.”
Paul’s face twisted in pain. “And me? Am I not good enough? Don’t I care about you enough? Why do you never see me?”
He always thought Rebecca just needed time to get over Bruce. He believed if he waited patiently and stayed by her side, eventually she’d notice how much he cared. He thought his moment would come. Instead, he had to watch her run straight into someone else’s arms, happier than she’d ever been with him. Defeat washed over him so completely that he barely recognized himself.
Rebecca opened her mouth, but all she could say was, “I’m sorry.” She’d said it before, over and over. At this point, all she could do was apologize.
You can’t force feelings. Love never comes from weighing your options or making comparisons.
She turned to go.
Paul’s eyes filled with sadness, his voice desperate. “Stephen had a first love he’ll never forget. Ten years ago, everyone in Coralbridge’s upper circles knew about it.”
Rebecca stopped in her tracks.
Paul’s lips curled into a small smile as he went on. “Then something happened. When things between them were at their best, their families forced them apart. Rebecca, compared to Bruce, Stephen is even less right for you. After a breakup like that, there’s no way he’ll ever forget her. Are you sure you want to be with someone who’ll always have a piece of his heart saved for another girl?”
His voice softened to almost a whisper. “Rebecca, I’m the only one who has no past. My heart and soul are only for you.”
Rebecca turned back, her face cold and unyielding. “Then you should find someone just as pure as you, not me.”
Rebecca watched as he loosened his tie and slumped back in his chair. He must have just finished a meeting. Suddenly, she felt a wave of affection for him.
She gave him a soft smile and shook her head. “It’s all fine. Everything’s taken care of.”
She didn’t say a word about Paul dropping by. No way. Even the calmest guy would lose it if he found out his girlfriend’s admirer had come over. She didn’t want Stephen to worry. Besides, she’d already settled things with her mom. This kind of drama wasn’t going to happen again.
Stephen’s eyes were shadowed and his smile was hard to read. “Glad to hear it. So, any ideas for the weekend? I can book something in advance.”
The summer heat was getting worse every day, so Rebecca wasn’t in the mood for going out. Remembering how Stephen had once mentioned a giant home theater at his place, she answered without thinking, “Can we go to your place? The villa you told me about last time.”

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
