Samantha’s eyes turned red as she hugged her daughter tight. “I just get scared sometimes. I’m scared that one day I won’t be here anymore, and there won’t be anyone to look after you.”

Samantha laughed, wiping her tears. “Those people are never right.”

Rebecca pouted, her voice playful. “I don’t care. It was right. That’s all that matters.”

Paul smiled when she finally spoke to him. “Both my grandpa and my other grandfather used to love fishing. They would cook whatever they caught right there by the water. I spent a lot of time with them, so I picked up a few skills.”

Rebecca nodded, her voice soft. “That makes sense.”

The meal was over before they knew it. Rebecca had already taken the day off, so she didn’t bother going back to work. After lunch, she flopped onto the sofa and started watching TV. Paul offered to help Samantha with the dishes.

Samantha chuckled and waved him off. “I’ve got it. Rebecca bought a dishwasher last month. Go sit in the living room and watch TV.”

She didn’t suggest he keep Rebecca company, just that he relax and watch TV. Paul noticed the difference in her attitude, but he didn’t say anything. He left the kitchen quietly.
