Lately, Rebecca and her team had been burning the midnight oil, working late into the night almost every day. But finally, all their effort paid off. The tech competition committee sent an email with the news they’d been hoping for.
“Congratulations to Sunforge Tech for making it into the top ten of this year’s competition. We are pleased to send this announcement as encouragement.”
Rebecca forwarded the email to the team group chat.
The office instantly exploded with excitement.
“No way, top ten! We’re one step closer to that three million!”
Before signing up, Rebecca had promised everyone: if they won first place, the three million dollar prize would be split equally among all the team members. When they did the math, every face lit up. Excluding Rebecca and Jon, who had opted out of the prize, there were nine people who’d get a cut. That meant over three hundred thousand dollars each. More than any year-end bonus they’d ever seen. Everyone was all in now.
With the finish line so close, the energy in the room was electric. Just two more weeks of hard work and the money would be sitting in their bank accounts. It felt unreal.
Fueled by the possibility, the whole group agreed to put in two extra hours every day for the next two weeks, just to perfect the AI model.
Jon watched the team hustle, shaking his head as he messaged Rebecca. “You really know how to get people to work overtime for free.”
Rebecca just raised an eyebrow. “Come on, it’s for the money. Nothing embarrassing about that.”
Two weeks passed in a blur.
Finally, the day of the tech competition finals arrived. Rebecca went over the product presentation again and again, making last-minute tweaks. She finally closed her laptop, took a steadying breath, and turned to the team.
“I’m good to go. Let’s head out.”
Jon uncrossed his legs and got up, looking totally at ease. Whenever Rebecca was hands-on with a project, he could always relax a little. Honestly, who else had a boss who worked harder than her team? If there was a tough project, she’d jump in first. If deadlines were tight, she’d take on extra work herself. Even now, with the competition, she was the one running the show, while everyone else just focused on their code.
Honestly, why exhaust yourself when you can have your boss take the lead?
The team packed into the elevator, chatting and laughing. But before they could hit the button, the sharp click of heels echoed down the hallway. Marissa appeared, looking impatient.
