The butler stood there, stunned for a moment before he managed to speak. “It is a good thing, sir. No one would never blame you for it.”
George broke into a wide grin. “You always know just what to say to please me.”
The butler let out a sheepish laugh. “I’m just being honest. Everyone knows I never say anything but the truth.”
George gave a little snort, then his face turned serious. “Call Stephen’s family and Brett in a bit. Tell them to come to the house on Saturday. I have something important to announce.”
He stopped in his tracks, his gaze sharp. “Make sure they all come. No excuses. Especially Stephen.”
George was still annoyed that Stephen had skipped the last family dinner on purpose. He hadn’t let that one go.
The butler nodded quickly. “Of course, sir.”
They started walking toward the door, and George asked, “How’s that investigation going?”
The butler replied, “The lady Ms. Duncans mentioned at dinner is called Rebecca.”
George narrowed his eyes a little. “So, it’s a girl?”
“Yes, sir. She’s very beautiful, and from what we can tell, she’s quite capable. It makes sense that Mr. Stephen Duncan would bring her in himself.”
George felt something wasn’t right. Stephen was quite focused on her. That was never just business. He’d noticed how Stephen had stood up for her at the dinner table. The minute Brett said something off, Stephen’s face just changed in an instant. If you didn’t know any better, you’d think…
George raised his eyebrows. “Are they really just boss and employee?”
Brett’s smile turned a little sad. “Joan, as long as you’re happy, I’d do anything for you. No matter what. But are you really sure about this? You’re ready to have Ben recognized by the family? If the truth comes out one day… you know what would happen if Grandpa found out he’s been lied to.”
Joan knew, of course she did.
Everyone in Coralbridge’s high society knew how tough George Duncan could be. He might look like a harmless old man now, but back in his prime he was a legend in the business world, ruthless and relentless. Without him, the Duncan family wouldn’t be where it is today. Now he acted like he’d left it all behind, but no one knew what he was really thinking.
Still, Joan’s lips curved into a quiet smile. She wasn’t lying to him. Ben really was the Duncan family’s great-grandson. She had nothing to fear.
“Brett, I know exactly what I’m doing. Even if the truth comes out one day, I won’t regret it.”
Her voice was steady and sure. Brett felt his heart sink. He’d been hoping she would give up on Stephen and choose him instead. He still believed that, sooner or later, he’d outshine his cousin.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
