Mr. Duncan had his checkup at the hospital today, and every test came back showing he was much healthier than before. He laughed, deep and warm. “You really do have the sweetest mouth in the whole family.”
The butler grinned. “I’m only speaking the truth, sir.”
Mr. Duncan’s smile grew even wider. They made their way toward the hospital entrance, where the driver was waiting. That’s when they heard a muffled crying sound nearby.
Mr. Duncan stopped short, turning toward the noise. Not far away, a little boy was crying so hard his nose was bright red and his long lashes were wet with tears. Anyone would feel sorry just looking at him.
“Isn’t that Ben?” the butler blurted, taking a step in the boy’s direction before stopping himself, suddenly remembering who Ben was.
George tapped his cane thoughtfully. “Come on, let’s see what’s going on.”
Ben was still sniffling, nearly in tears, when two shadows fell over him. He looked up and instantly recognized them. His eyes lit up, tears forgotten for a moment. “Great-Grandpa!”
Hearing that, George felt his heart melt. His voice turned soft and gentle. “What are you doing here all alone? Where’s your mom? Look at you, crying so much your eyes are all red, just like a little bunny.”
“Mommy went to get some medicine,” Ben said, voice trembling. “She told me to wait right here and not move, but… but…” The memory hit him again and his mouth trembled, tears rolling down his cheeks all over again.
“Don’t cry, sweetheart. Tell me what happened. Maybe I can help you.”
Ben pointed with his tiny finger. “That’s my car over there.”
George followed his gaze and spotted a small group of older kids fighting over a red toy car, just a little ways off.
So that’s why Ben was crying. Someone had taken his toy.
George shot a look at the butler, who nodded and slipped away. Two minutes later, he was back, holding out the red toy car.
Ben’s face lit up. “Wow! Thank you, Great-Grandpa! You’re even better than Spider-Man!”
George laughed, the sound booming and happy. “Better than Spider-Man, huh? I had no idea I was that impressive.”
