Colton kicked back, one foot up on the coffee table as he picked at his teeth with a toothpick, looking as smug as ever. “Wow, getting all worked up already? Come on, let’s not play pretend. Honestly, our whole family’s a mess. Every last one of us.”
Joan shook with anger, glaring at him like she could set him on fire just with her eyes.
Colton didn’t care at all. He just kept going, sounding almost bored. “I knew about that kidnapping plan. That was all you. I just told Neil to steal something valuable, sell it, and get some quick cash. But you? You pushed him to kidnap those two Duncan brothers. Go big or go home, right? And what happened? Your useless father got caught, then tried to take them down with him. The whole thing blew up.”
He paused, eyes hard. “I waited all night for him to come back. Never did. All I got was a visit from the police. You know why? Because my sweet little niece called them. If you hadn’t snitched, I never would have ended up in jail.”
Back when Colton was working down south, he’d gotten himself into trouble for theft and robbery. The police down there had been after him for years. It was Joan’s tip that finally got him caught. She gave them everything they needed, and he got slapped with an eight-year sentence. He ended up serving seven, got out a little early for good behavior.
Colton touched his left eye, his face turning a little sad for once. “Lost this eye in prison. Thanks for that.”
Suddenly, he flew into a rage and kicked the coffee table over, sending everything crashing to the floor. He stormed over to Joan in two quick steps and grabbed her by the throat, squeezing tight.
“You ruined my life. If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t have gone to prison. I’d still have both my eyes. This is all on you. And don’t forget, back then you promised me two million if I helped your dad. Well, guess what? Two million isn’t enough. I want twenty million now.”
He squeezed harder and leaned in. “You’ve got three days. Get me twenty million in cash, or I’ll tell George the truth about what happened to his son. Let’s see how he feels about his mother then.”
Joan struggled, clawing at his hands, her voice barely more than a croak. “I… I… can’t breathe… I’ll do it… just let me go…”
