Ben’s crying only got louder, drawing more and more stares from the people passing by. A few sales associates from nearby stores even leaned out to watch, clearly enjoying the scene. When it comes to kids, people always side with them. If there’s a conflict between an adult and a child, most folks don’t even care who started it. They just assume it’s the grown-up’s fault.
Right now, Rebecca could feel all those judging eyes on her. She let out a slow breath, ready to say something, but Judy beat her to it. Judy’s cheeks were bright red with anger. She’d never met anyone quite like Joan before.
“Excuse me, but your son ran into Rebecca first,” Judy said, her voice shaking. “Look at her dress. The paint from your son’s hands ruined it, and now she can’t even wear it. Instead of telling him off, you’re blaming Rebecca?”
Joan scowled. “I know my own son. He’s well-behaved. He wouldn’t just run around or bump into someone for no reason.”
Marissa jumped in right away, acting like Joan’s backup. “Exactly, Ben is a really good kid.”
The tone made it obvious. They were saying Rebecca must have done something on purpose.
Joan turned a cold stare on Rebecca, like she was expecting an explanation or maybe just demanding an apology without saying it out loud.
Rebecca smiled and crouched down to Ben’s level. “Hey, do you agree with what your mom said? Tell us the truth, okay? Boys who don’t tell the truth sometimes wake up with really long noses.”
Ben froze, his shoulders hunching as he tried to hide in Joan’s arms. That reaction said it all.
Joan didn’t expect things to flip so quickly. She looked embarrassed for a second, then put on a stern face and grabbed Ben’s hand. “Tell everyone the truth. Did you bump into this lady first?”
Ben only cried harder, his wails echoing through the mall. “No, I didn’t! It wasn’t me! She bumped into me!”
