Marissa’s eyes went wide. “Five thousand? Are you serious?”

Rebecca stayed cool. “Alright then, let’s pull up the security footage and call the police. See what they have to say.”

She had just pulled out her phone when Joan shot Marissa a look.

Marissa groaned, but gave in. “Fine, I’ll pay. Seriously, calling the cops over something this small? You fancy types love wasting everyone’s time.”

She took out her phone and sent the money to Rebecca, dragging her feet the whole time.

Rebecca didn’t even bother replying. She just grabbed Judy and Cindy by the arms and walked off.

Joan turned to Marissa, her eyes warm. “Thanks for stepping in. If you hadn’t been here, I don’t know what I would’ve done.”

Marissa waved her off. “Come on, we’re family. Of course I’d help.”

While Marissa was still standing there, Joan quietly transferred fifty thousand to her. Even after subtracting the five thousand she just paid, there was a lot left.

Then Joan remembered something. “Oh, I need to make a quick call. Can you take Ben and look around? If he wants anything, just get it for him. If you need more, let me know.”

Marissa’s eyes lit up. She knew it paid to help Joan. Then another thought popped into her head. Joan didn’t even have a job, but she could just hand out fifty thousand like it was nothing. Brett must really spoil her.

A little jealousy pricked at Marissa, but it faded just as quickly. She grinned, scooping Ben up. “Don’t worry, go make your call. I’ll keep Ben entertained.”

A couple minutes later, Joan slipped into the women’s restroom and dialed Brett.

When he picked up, she didn’t say anything. She just started crying.

Brett’s voice was full of worry. “Joan, please, don’t cry. Where are you? I’ll come get you.”

Joan stopped him right away, her voice shaking. “No, don’t. It’s nothing serious.”

“Then tell me what happened.”

“It’s really nothing. I just took Ben shopping, and we ran into Ms. Harper. We argued a little.”
