While they were talking, a group of police officers walked in, their presence impossible to ignore.
Leading them was someone George knew all too well, Mr. Keith.
Mr. Keith gave George a polite nod and held out an arrest warrant.
George’s shock was obvious, but he pulled himself together quickly and stepped up. “Mr. Keith, today’s my family’s private banquet. Is there any way this can wait until it’s over?”
Mr. Keith’s voice was apologetic. “Mr. Duncan, we’re acting on direct orders. I hope you can cooperate with us.”
He turned to the guests, explaining why they were there and asking everyone to remain calm and cooperate.
“You three, check the other rooms. I’ll take care of things here,” Mr. Keith told his team.
The guests exchanged anxious looks, everyone whispering and wondering who could possibly be the suspect.
Charlie had been restless ever since he overheard the butler and George talking. He frowned, unable to hold back. “There’s no way anyone from the Duncan family could be a suspect. The police have got it wrong. Look around, everyone here is someone important. No one here could be mixed up in something like this.”
Richie loosened his tie, looking thoughtful. “The Duncans have a reputation. The police wouldn’t just storm in unless they had real evidence.”
Meanwhile, Jon had moved past his initial shock and was now strangely calm. Maybe this was all part of Stephen’s plan. He had a million questions swirling in his head, but he wasn’t worried. He figured the answers would come if he just waited.
He let out a slow breath. Any minute now, the truth would come out.
Macie, on the other hand, couldn’t hide her delight. She clapped her hands. “Well, there goes the banquet. Guess it’s over before it even started.”
She hadn’t wanted to come anyway. She only came because Charlie insisted. Now that things were falling apart, she was thrilled. She even snapped a photo and sent it to Chelsey.
Charlie shot her a glare. “You really don’t get it, do you?”
Macie pouted. “Says the expert.”
Charlie grumbled, “You’re getting bolder every day. You never used to talk back, but now you can’t seem to stop.”
