Brett let out a relaxed smile. “I’m taking Ben back with me. My mom’s there too. We probably won’t come back again.”

He paused, looking a little sheepish. “Honestly, I was never interested in running the company. That was just out of stubbornness. People like you and Stephen are the ones who really fit the job.”

He looked up, hands tightening a bit as he spoke. “I wanted to see you not just to apologize. I have another favor to ask.”

Rebecca met his eyes and nodded for him to go on.

Brett took a breath. “I know I hurt Stephen and Cindy a lot when I came back. I… I’m really sorry.”

He thought about how his pride and obsession nearly ruined his family ties.

He went on, “I can’t face them. I don’t even have the guts to apologize in person. So I wanted to ask you to pass along a message for me. Tell them not to worry. I won’t mess with their lives anymore. I already asked to step down from the board. From now on, Duncan Corporation is all theirs.”

Rebecca blinked, taking it in.

He was saying his side of the family was out, leaving all decisions to Stephen. They’d just keep what was rightfully theirs, and nothing more.

“Alright. I’ll tell them,” Rebecca promised.

After Brett left, Rebecca sat there in the café for a while by herself. She scrolled through her phone and spotted a post from Cindy.
